Monday, February 23, 200402/23/04: I'm not dead yet...
I couldn't let it go... My wife was so proud of me for deciding to not kill myself to finish the Lost and the Damned in time for the GT... but I couldn't let it go :-)
I painted a lot over the weekend (staying up 'til 4:00am painting is a sure sign of a diseased mind), and I think I'll be done in time. The models won't be perfect, or even as nice as I had recently hoped for... but they will be done to GT standards. Here's a look at the fluffy armylist I'll be giving out at the GT (I'll also have a game-friendly version for my opponents) Bigger, legible version here. ![]()
Thursday, February 19, 200402/19/04: Amera Plastic Mouldings
There's a posting at Dakka about Amera Plastic Mouldings. It looks like very cool "starters" for terrain projects. The stuff is kinda bland, but it'd be easy to flash it up a bit.
Monday, February 16, 200402/16/04: Decision Time
Well, I've got less than 2 weeks to get everything together for the Seattle GT. I could get everything painted by the GT, but it wouldn't be to the level of quality I want (plus, I'd have to become a painting Hermit). I've put a lot of time into the conversions so far, and it'd be a shame to screw them up with bad paint jobs. I'll be taking my Imperial Fists to the GT.
This doesn't mean I'll stop blogging my progress -- to the contrary. Taking pictures along the way does slow down the process; I've not posted anywhere near as much these past couple of weeks because of the time pressure. Now I'll have the time to do it right, and take pics and post too.
Friday, February 13, 200402/13/04: Reality Check
Two nights ago, I inked about 20 Traitors with Dark Green Ink, instead of Green Ink (I'll post pictures showing the difference later) -- the mistake cost me a whole evening of rework >sigh<
While it is still technically *possible* that I'll have the LatD ready for Seattle, it is less likely than I'm comfortable with. Given that, I'm starting to make backup plans to take my Imperial Fists. They're painted and ready to go. I still need Obstacles, or course. I've decided to go with 4 Tank Traps (Razor wire isn't so good, IMO). Here are some WIP shots: To make the base, I used two Warhammer Fantasy 25mm Regiment Bases. One, I cut in half, the other I just took the edge off. Then I glued them together. The I-Beams and Pipes are just styrene (Zgames is selling Plastruct now, which is a good thing). Since I wanted to keep even 45-degree cuts to mount the pieces to the base, I used my little X-acto Razor Saw and Miter box to make all the cuts. I'm basing all my LatD the same, first with a layer of sand, then with spots of railroad ballast. I've been using CA to glue everything down. Basing usually works okay with watered down PVA (white glue), but I'm in too much of a hurry, so I'll spend the extra few bucks on superglue.
Sunday, February 08, 200402/08/04: Army List Revisited
Yesterday, MadEdric and I played a game to help us tune up our armies for the Seattle GT. He was playing his Ultramarines, and we tried out the "GT Game 5: Recon" scenario. I played a list that looked like this:
1 Arch-Heretic (Mark of Slaanesh, Darkblade, Terminator Armor, Combat Drugs) 9 Traitors (CCW & Las-pistol, Agitator with Power Weapon, Icon Bearer) Chimera 6 Daemonettes 6 Daemonettes 6 Possessed (Mark of Slaanesh, Daemonic Flight, Aspiring Champion with Power Weapon and Personal Icon) 17 Mutants (CCW, Boss with Power Fist, Icon Bearer) 1 Aspiring Champion (Daemonic Strength, Mark of Slaanesh, Power Weapon) 17 Mutants (CCW, Boss with Power Fist, Icon Bearer) 1 Aspiring Champion (Daemonic Strength, Mark of Slaanesh, Power Weapon) 6 Traitors (Lascannon, Lasguns) 6 Traitors (Lascannon, Lasguns) 6 Traitors (Heavy Bolter, Heavy Stubber) Hellhound Leman Russ Leman Russ Overall, I was really pleased with how the list played. MadEdric's die rolling was not good, Loyalist Lascannons missed throughout the game; my die rolling was pretty good overall (Lascannons hit more than they should have, but deviations reduced Leman Russ effectiveness). Anyways, I don't want this to turn into a Batrep.. I did come out with a few takeways, some from the game itself and others from the post-game discussion with MadEdric. First and foremost, I *must* *stop* advancing my Arch-Heretic too far forward. He got into assault, but the Traitors he was with weren't tough enough to hold the Assault. He ended up tearing through a couple of squads (earned his points back, I'm pretty sure) but finally died to a Power Fist. I flanked the flying Possessed up the right side of the board, where they summoned in a squad of Daemonettes and really put the hurt on MadEdric's Deathwatch squad. Unfortunately, MadEdric got his Dreadnought into the assault. The Possessed couldn't hurt it, so it (with help from a very lucky Vet Sergeant w/ Power Fist ;-) tore them up (I lost four of the six Daemonette's to MadEdric's DW Captain -- they pulled him down but it cost them..) Two big learnings from this fracas: 1) The Possessed need a Power Fist, and 2) The Possessed need more support in Assault. In a couple of previous games, I used the Possessed in conjunction with the Arch-Heretic (mutually supporting each other) and that worked out really well -- that'll be my new Standard Tactic #1 from now on. The only other change I think I'll make is to trade the Traitor Heavy Bolter for an Autocannon. The Heavy Bolter doesn't have the punch to stop a transport, an Autocannon will fill that role n icely. So, I have this: (note that Army Builder doesn't show the Icon Bearers on this print out) The Volscani Cataphracts 1850 Pts - CSM: The Lost and the Damned Army 1 Chaos Lieutenant (HQ) @ 131 Pts Mark of Slaanesh; CC Weapon (x1) Terminator Armour [25] Combat Drugs [25] Dark Blade [25] 9 Traitors (Fast Attack) @ 209 Pts Laspistol & CCW (x8); Meltagun (x1); Frag Grenades 1 Agitator @ [29] Pts CC Weapon (x1); Power Weapon (x1); Frag Grenades 1 Chimera @ [93] Pts Turret Multilaser; Hull Heavy Flamer Extra Armour [5] Smoke Launchers [3] 6 Daemonette (Elites) @ 90 Pts Daemonette #Daemonic Talons [0] 6 Daemonette (Elites) @ 90 Pts Daemonette #Daemonic Talons [0] 5 Possessed Marines (Elites) @ 292 Pts Mark of Slaanesh; CC Weapon (x5); Bolt Pistol (x5) #Daemonic Strength [0] #Daemonic Aura [0] #Daemonic Flight [15] 1 Aspiring Champion @ [82] Pts Mark of Slaanesh; Power Fist (x1); Bolt Pistol (x1) #Daemonic Strength [0] #Daemonic Aura [0] Personal Icon [10] #Daemonic Flight [15] 16 Mutants (Troops) @ 136 Pts CC Weapon; Flamer (x2); Frag Grenades 1 Mutant Boss @ [31] Pts Power Weapon (x1); Combi-Flamer; Frag Grenades 1 CSM Aspiring Champion (HQ) @ 47 Pts Mark of Slaanesh; Power Weapon (x1); Bolt Pistol (x1) Daemonic Strength [5] 16 Mutants (Troops) @ 136 Pts CC Weapon; Flamer (x2); Frag Grenades 1 Mutant Boss @ [31] Pts Power Weapon (x1); Combi-Flamer; Frag Grenades 1 CSM Aspiring Champion (HQ) @ 47 Pts Mark of Slaanesh; Power Weapon (x1); Bolt Pistol (x1) Daemonic Strength [5] 6 Traitors (Troops) @ 73 Pts Lasgun (x4); Autocannon (x1); Heavy Stubber (x1); Frag Grenades 6 Traitors (Troops) @ 68 Pts Lasgun (x5); Lascannon (x1); Frag Grenades 6 Traitors (Troops) @ 68 Pts Lasgun (x5); Lascannon (x1); Frag Grenades 1 Hellhound (Fast Attack) @ 133 Pts Inferno Cannon; Hull Heavy Bolter Pintle Storm Bolter [10] Extra Armour [5] Smoke Launchers [3] 1 Leman Russ Battle Tank (Heavy Support) @ 160 Pts Battle Cannon; Hull Heavy Bolter; Heavy Bolter Sponsons Extra Armour [5] 1 Leman Russ Battle Tank (Heavy Support) @ 170 Pts Battle Cannon; Hull Lascannon; Heavy Bolter Sponsons Extra Armour [5]
Monday, February 02, 200402/02/04: Daemonette Catastrophe
I made my first major modeling faux pas in the army thus far; fortunately, it is salvageable! I give you the world's worst WIP Daemonette:
The first three steps in painting Daemonettes should NEVER be 1) Basecoat Pink 2) Thin Purple Ink wash 3) Pink + Light Flesh wash Consider yourselves warned!! Here's the salvage operation: Castrol Super Clean is purple... very Slaaneshi dont'cha think?

02/02/04: I'm not dead yet
Things are progressing, but slowly. I've got a bunch of stuff in the pipeline, but nothing worth photographing and posting about yet.
I have, however, decided on the army fluff. My existing concept lines up very nicely with a bit of existing Eye of Terror fluff. During the assault on Cadia, the Volscani Cataphracts (a Cadian Armored force) revealed their traitorous plans and turned their guns on the Cadian Command (refer to Codex: Eye of Terror and Codex: Imperial Guard for details). The timing of the Volscani Heresy, along with their Tank-based doctrine of war sits so well with the fluff I was envisioning for my guys that I suspect I might have read the related passages in C:EoT and consciously forgot it, while my subconscious tooled up a parallel storyline. Anyways, my Fallen Daemonhunter background fits nicely as an explanation for the Volscani Heresy -- the Volscani were billeted as inducted Guard to my Arch-Heretic, who planted the seeds of rebellion. Plans grew to fruition in time to take the head off of the Cadian Command Structure during the assault on Cadia. If not for that damned Ursarker Creed, my as-yet-unnamed Arch-Heretic would have been able to deliver Cadia to Abaddon and ensured his position in the ranks of Slaanesh.
